Yamaha YPG-635 Review
The Yamaha YPG-635 is an 88-key digital piano that lets you bring the experience of authentic “grand” piano into your home without having to break the bank to do it. It’s feature-to-price ratio offers a great ‘bang-for-the-buck’ when compared to other digital pianos.
Here’s a video of the YPG-635 in action:

Look and Feel
The piano’s keys are weighted to offer the touch and feel of a regular piano while playing so your fingers won’t know the difference.
It comes with an adorning strong wooden stand that lifts the piano keyboard to the proper suggested height. I read many reviews about the ease of the assembly of the piano in as little as 5 minutes, requiring just a screwdriver.
A sustain pedal comes with the piano, which keeps keys you are pressing “sustained” when you use the pedal, but not any that you hold down after.
One major benefit is that the piano can be moved by yourself – no need to hire a professional. The keyboard weighs 70 pounds, while a grand piano averages over 600 pounds. The footprint of this piano is also far less as well, making it easy to fit along a wall in a home, apartment, or dorm room.
The keyboard has 2 USB ports to connect it to a computer or to plug in a USB thumb drive to transfer or record music. The piano is compatible with Windows 7, including the 64-bit version.
How’s It Sound?
This piano is “true stereo” with independent tweeters and woofers, includes a bass boost feature.
There is also a jack for headphones so that you can play or practice anytime you want and not have to worry about disturbing others.
The digital sound processor includes:
- 29 reverb effects that emulate playing in a regular room to a large concert auditorium
- 64 notes of polyphony allow you to play multiple notes simultaneously
- 26 harmony effects to enhance the melody
- 24 chorus effects
- 12 drum and sound effects packages
There are also over 100 panel voices such as trumpet, trombone, flute, and “Grand Piano”. All of these options can be selected via a scroll wheel menu system displayed on a backlit 320×240 LCD display.
No Need For a Piano Teacher!
Perhaps one of the best things about the YPG-635 is that it can actually teach you how to play piano. It comes with 100 songs that can be learned. There are different methods of teaching you to play, such as stopping playback of a song until you find the correct note, or varying the tempo to equal the rate at which you are playing.
The piano will even grade your performance after your practice sessions! You can even compose and record your own music with the sequencer, using multiple tracks and instruments.
Once you get into more advanced play, you can program the keyboard as you like and save the setup, so you’ll never lose your settings.
Customer Reviews
I read many reviews from customers about the Yamaha YPG-635 and these are some of the latest ones:
“It’s easily within the normal variation of real piano keyboards. This was the key deciding factor for picking this keyboard…”
“This is an excellent digital piano for the price…”
“Our son loves this new instrument. He’s been able to create a ton of music with it, adding all sorts of sounds…”
“Overall its an awesome investment and a great instrument for beginners…”
Negatives
While I consider this piano to be an excellent choice, there are a few small complaints that consumers were making when I was collecting my information, so I believe it’s only honest to share them.
At 70 pounds, this keyboard isn’t very lightweight if you’re planning on doing performances, parties, etc.
The USB ports and the headphone jack are on the back of the unit, so if you have the piano against a wall, they can be hard to get to.
A few consumers stated that the volume of the speakers was a bit low at the maximum setting.
Summary
If you’re in the market for a quality digital piano, I think the Yamaha YPG-635 is a great choice, as the consumer feedback is really positive. As mentioned, the best prices are at Amazon and here’s a link to the product page there if you are interested:
