Yamaha P155

Owning an actual acoustic piano is usually not a choice for most people.  Their extreme cost, huge size, and immense weight pretty much seal the deal.  They also go out of tune and require professional tuning.

The Yamaha P155 solves these problems.  It’s an 88-key piano that weighs just 37 pounds and comes in an ebony, mahogany, or cherry finish.  It produces identical sounds and touch of a “grand” piano, without any of its challenges, while doing a lot of things the acoustic can never do.

Yamaha P155 Review

Actual acoustic instruments (a full-size concert grand piano for example) were painstakingly recorded to create the P155′s sound.  Various playing strength’s were sampled which are then digitally re-produced on the Yamaha depending upon a player’s touch.  This produces dynamic nuances just like a genuine acoustic piano.

14 different 128-note polyphonic “voices” or instruments are available to be played on the Yamaha P155.  These include two grand pianos, a guitar, and a wood bass among others.  Two voices can be played simultaneously to create a deeper sound.

Here’s a video of the P155 being played:

Same Feel as Acoustic Grand

If you ever play an acoustic grand piano after playing this Yamaha piano,  you will have the finger strength to do it.  The P155′s keys are weighted the same as such, meaning heavier keys on the lower notes, lighter keys on the higher ones.  You can even adjust the sensitivity of the keyboard so that maximum volume can be achieved with either light or heavy presses depending on your preference.

Spruce Up Your Sound

The P155 provides different digital effects that you can use to greatly enhance your play:

  • Brilliance can be used to change the brilliance of the sound from bright to soft
  • Reverb adds depth and creates true acoustic atmospheres such as a hall or a stage environment
  • Effect adds depth such as a shimmering or sweeping sound
  • The pitch of the keyboard can be shifted up or down to match the range of a singer or other acoustics

All of the sound of this electric piano can be heard through the two built-in 12-watt speakers.  There are also two headphone jacks conveniently located on the front of the piano if you wish not to disturb others or play at any hour.    You can also hook the piano up to an external amplifier via the AUX out jack, which will really boost the volume, making the P155 a great stage piano choice.

Record Your Performances!

An entire song can be recorded, or you can choose to save either the left or right-hand part only, so that you can play it back and practice with the other hand.  You can even edit settings such as tempo, voice, or reverb after recording is done.

Recordings are saved in standard MIDI format and can be transferred to a computer for editing.

Customer Reviews

I compiled a number of reviews from current owners about the P155 digital piano and these are some recent ones:

“I thought my dad’s digital piano had awesome hammer action (some m-audio keyboard) but this P155 blows his out of the water!…”

“Really restored my joy in the piano after not owning one for a few years now…”

“There are subtle sound effects from a real piano reproduced, making the whole experience very realistic…”

“Overall I am very pleased and I do not think you can get this good quality at a lower price
point…”

Negatives

I can honestly say that I only really came across two complaints while doing my research for this Yamaha P155 review.

One was that the piano only has the ability to store three recorded performances.  Songs must be deleted or saved from the piano to a USB device in order to record more.

The other is that the USB port on the unit can only be used for a USB device, such as a flash drive.  It cannot be used to interface with an actual computer.  In order to do this, you must use the MIDI jacks instead, which will require a MIDI to USB cable.

Summary

I feel the Yamaha P155 is a good choice if you’re looking to buy a quality digital piano, especially for stage play.  The Yamaha P155 review feedback from consumers is extremely positive.
