Indulge in Retro Sounds

Built with the Korg RX or Real eXperience Technology, the Korg SV-1 offers a multitude of 36 sounds ranging from vintage electronic to funky to classic to traditional acoustic, each sound crafted as realistically as possible. Examples of available sounds:

Acoustic piano sounds which include: 3 way stereo versions of grand pianos, intimate upright piano, mono piano for mini gigs, late ‘70s-mid 80’s Japanese electro-acoustic variation, Korg’s signature and rocking SG-1D, plus other mixed sounds

Electric piano sounds which include: velocity switched “tine” versions, classic “reed” based model sounds, vintage analog “electra” sounds, plus two Japanese mid-80’s digital sounds

Organs which include: the classic tonewheel model, British and Italian combo organs, and the signature American tube-driven console organ.

Clavs, tape-based analog strings, choir and analog synth sounds

These sounds can be further enhanced with amps and effects namely: the equalizes, pre fx, amp model, modulation fx, reverb/delay and the limiter. All of these features make this piano an instrument which caters to extreme sound detail.

Take Control

A Korg SV1 review is not complete without the mention of it being user-friendly. The front panel makes for an easy-to-use and quick control interface, avoiding confusing menus and multiple button presses. Rotary knobs are illuminated with LEDs for easier spotting. Plus, 8 car radio-style buttons are available for instant recall of 8 favorite sounds and settings. These features provide for a smoother transition when performing with a Korg SV1 onstage. The piano is also equipped with balanced XLR and ¼” outputs, left and right inputs, MIDI in and out jacks, USB MIDI Port, and 3 pedal connections: Damper, Pedal 1, and Pedal 2.

Customer Feedback

“Great Instrument for the price.”

“…worth every penny.”

“I highly recommend it over anything else you’re thinking of getting.”

“Incredible sound and very, very accessible hardware-only interface…”

“You can change the sound in many ways within a second by turning a knob. That’s a big plus for me.”

Vintage Decadence

Owner reviews rave about the piano’s vintage stand out appeal with its curvaceous façade, retro-inspired buttons and finishes available in Metallic Red with Charcoal ends for the 73-key version and Carbon Gray with Metallic Copper ends for the 88-key version.

What’s missing from the SV1 is that it has no modulation wheels or pitch bend and no splitting and layering. But apart from that it is a well-defined, performance-oriented instrument capable of reminiscing hit-making vintage sounds; making owners more than enthusiastic on giving a positive Korg SV-1 review.

Yamaha YDP181: Dynamic Sound

This piano uses Yamaha AWM or Advanced Wave Memory, a sampling system which produces the realistic sound of an acoustic instrument. This feature uses digital technology to record the instrument sound and applies high-quality digital filter technology to the recorded samples. The AWM Dynamic Stereo Sampling has the capability to produce dynamic tones by recording samples of various playing strengths.
The waveform of the sound created varies depending on the playing strength: from pianissimo to fortissimo. The Yamaha YDP181 also provides a Damper Resonance feature which provides the broadening of tones created during pedaling, mimicking the complex sounds of an actual grand piano.

Unlike other conventional digital pianos that run out of notes fast when playing quick or legato passages, the Yamaha YDP 181 offers a 128 note polyphonic range; letting you play a maximum of 128 notes at a time for more sustained playing.

Touch Sensitivity

Just like a real acoustic piano, the YDP 181 is built with a GH or Graded Hammer keyboard making heavier notes responsive to a heavier touch and higher notes responsive to a lighter touch. The GH feature also has the capability to produce fast repetitive notes with perfect articulation. On top of that, the keyboard also has a touch sensitivity setting of soft, medium and hard, depending on style or finger strength.

Recording Capabilities

For any musician who wants to document their playing, the YDP 181 comes with a USB device port, making it easy to store and transfer songs that you’ve recorded. The piano also has a Dual Voice capability, allowing the user to play two different instrument sounds at the same time. In addition, it also has an on-board 2-track song recorder which allows you to record while performing live.

Listening Pleasure

The YDP 181 can also cater to your listening pleasure. It comes with 50 different piano songs, chosen for their beauty and functionality. Students will most certainly benefit from this as it can serve to be a tool for musical inspiration and practice.

Owner Comments

Here’s a couple comments from owners of the Yamaha YDP 181:

“…in terms of the build quality and the feel of a real piano, the YDP-181 is the clear winner.”

“…this piano has amazing sound that you can’t tell the difference with grand pianos”

What’s Missing?

Although the piano has good features, it lacks the complexity to appeal to live performers opting for more dynamic playing. It has no microphone input, lacks sound banks with a variety of musical instruments, and not enough effects and parameters available to tweak the playing.

Summary

But overall, the Yamaha YDP 181 provides high-quality sound and playability, making it one of the frontrunners in the digital piano market.

Yamaha CP50 Review: Amazing Sound Technology

The Yamaha CP50 is equipped with Yamaha’s new core sound technology, namely the SCM or the Spectral Component Modeling tone generation system. This allows the tone and touch approach more expressive as the player can recreate 12 selected acoustic and vintage electronic sounds realistically. A combination of sampling and technology, this system optimizes tone generation for the instrument. This technology also gives a selection of physical components such as piano types, amplifiers and effects, all with various adjustable parameters for enhanced playability.

Moreover, this digital piano has additional 215 sounds and various effects such as strings, organs, clavs, guitars, pads, vibes, brass; making the piano capable of symphonic music. Apart from Virtual Circuit Modeling effects, the piano also features effects taken from the Motif XS line of Synthesizers. With all these sound features, the CP50 proves to be of tremendous sonic versatility, making it ideal for musicians who love to experiment and perform live.

Yamaha CP50 Spec Chart:

Master Keyboard

Aiming for balance, consistency and the feel of a true grand piano, Yamaha utilized the GH or Graded Hammer for its keyboard of 88 weighted keys. This means a keyboard action of heavier playing on the left and lighter playing on the right, providing a smooth transition for playing.

You may want to consider the optional Yamaha YKA7500 double-x keyboard stand if you are purchasing the CP50, since it is heavier than your average digital piano.

Record and Playback

A Yamaha CP50 review mentions that the piano is more than just for playing. It features a record and playback function, making it perfect for playing demo tracks, collaborating with other music and composing songs. You can record as MIDI data with the latest MOTIF operating system, or as an audio file on a USB flash-memory device. The Yamaha CP50 also features a drum/rhythm backing track, making it useful for inspiring songwriting.

Portable

Perhaps one of the features stated in a Yamaha CP50 review that gets “electric grands” enthusiasts thrilled about is the fact that the piano is very portable and easy for one man to carry. Despite the weighted keys and the Graded Hammer action, the CP50 weighs in just about 20.9kg, making the piano perfect for musicians on the go.

Customer Reviews

“…this stage piano is not a toy and built to last.”

“I consider the money as very well spent.”

“I bought this instrument for it’s recording ability (from keyboard to itunes in about 60 seconds.)”

Flaws

Despite all these amazing features, the Yamaha CP50 also has its flaws:

Lesser piano voices and sound banks compared to the other pianos in the Yamaha CP series

No power amplifier or compressor block

No microphone input

Doesn’t have wooden ivory synthetic keys like the other pianos in the CP series

Summary

But overall, one who reads a Yamaha CP50 review will be amazed at the piano’s features of being versatile, compact and affordable, making the it a good choice for a variety of musicians and artists.

Touch and Tone

Like the Yamaha CP1, newly developed technology has inspired the NW-STAGE wooden keyboard topped with 88 synthetic ivory keys for the CP5. This feature minimizes vibration and distortion allowing for a more stellar and effortless performance. This Yamaha piano affords an effortless feel of reproducing the feeling of playing an acoustic piano with its sophisticated and easy-to-use interface.

Record and Playback

Perhaps one of the more prominent features of the CP5 is its capability to record and playback. You can record compositions and performances internally as MIDI data, or store them alternatively on a USB flash-memory device as audio data. Moreover, editing these and other Wave files is also possible by using the bundled Cubase AI5. The piano is also equipped with a MIC input jack, making it suitable for a performance by a vocal keyboardist. The CP5 gives musicians and artists who love to perform live and record demo tracks something to rave about.

Owner Feedback

While putting together this Yamaha CP5 review, I came across these owner comments:

“I have been looking for great piano sound and feel for along time. This is the first one I’ve found that did not fall short.”

“Fantastic piano sound!”

“Sounds great and pretty easy to learn “straight out of the box”.”

“I just got one of these and it is truly inspiring to play with the touch and piano sound.”

The Bottom Line

Overall, Yamaha CP5 reviews consist of mostly positive and impressed feedback from users mainly because apart from being an upgraded top of the line stage piano, it is also affordable. This appeals to a wide range of musicians, whether pro or amateur. It is definitely a good bargain considering that the Yamaha CP5 is equipped with multiple functions and creates phenomenal sound.

Incorporating a new core sound technology, this piano allows for an increased vibrant playability, something that can definitely make musicians look forward to.

CP1: New Technology

One of the prominent features of this digital piano is the Yamaha SCM or the Spectral Component Modeling tone generation system, a unique new sound technology which produces 17 acoustic and electronic piano sounds. This lets you recreate a wide variety of piano sounds ranging from the standard vintage to the most original ones. Physical components like the piano types, amplifiers, effects can be adjusted to different parameters, allowing CP1 users to freely be creative in making acoustic and vintage electronic music.

Yamaha CP1 Spec Chart:

Keyboard Sensation

Yet again, newly developed technology has inspired the NW-STAGE wooden keyboard topped with 88 synthetic ivory keys for the Yamaha CP1. This feature minimizes vibration and distortion allowing for a more stellar and effortless performance. Other master keyboard functions also include set-up of up to four virtual zones, designated to separate tone generators including external MIDI devices. Yamaha’s expertise of making state-of-the art keyboards clearly aimed for the users of this digital piano to deliver smoother playability on stage.

Visual Statement

Yamaha has always been the front-runner for producing timeless pieces. Even with their continuous use of technology and innovation, they still manage to keep tradition and the sophistication of an instrument, which can be very well seen in the Yamaha CP1. It features classic wooden side panels and a vintage textured top reminiscing that of a keyboard from the past. Other visual features also include a vacuum fluorescent display, brushed aluminum volume knobs and an illuminated Yamaha logo. The CP1 is definitely made not only to produce expressive music but also to be visually enticing.

Customer Feedback

Here are some quotes from customers about this piano:

“If you don’t need the extra synth sounds and just want the absolute best sounding piano tones, the CP1 is the only option.”

“Sounds way more realistic than a Roland V piano.”

“I just bought one of these, truly amazing piano.”

Cons

Even an award-winning piano has its own flaws subjective to different users’ preferences and appeal. The CP1 is said to be too light in terms of delivering a more dramatic and classic performance. Also, the keys may seem to be a bit more sensitive as sound is triggered no matter how slowly the keys are pushed, proving to be a problem for the more meticulous players. The piano also weighs almost 60lbs and is about 5ft in length, causing it to be a struggle for one person to handle as it is not really portable.

Overall Appeal

All in all, the Yamaha CP1 is a masterpiece stage piano preferred by many artists and professionals. It is built on a foundation of new technology and development, thus offering multiple and unique new features, allowing players to be more creative and more experimental when creating music.

I’ve done many piano keyboard reviews, which you can find links to on the right sidebar menu. Prior to purchasing a digital keyboard, there are some choices you will need to make regarding the features you’re looking for.

If you’re an aspiring pianist, you may want to start with an entry-level piano. If you’ve got experience and are ready to turn it up a notch, something in the mid-tier may be more to your liking. Or if you’re seasoned enough that you are creating your own music or playing gigs, a digital piano on the high-end is probably most appropriate. Whichever category you fall into, you’ll understand it all better after reading my info.

It can certainly be grueling to figure out the best keyboard for you, especially with there being so many different kinds out there. Detailed below I have given you all the specs and facts needed about the various features you can find on keyboards so that it is easier for you to pick the right one for your circumstance.

Here’s a Comparison of Some Piano Keyboards Currently On the Market:

(refresh this page to see other models)

Piano Keyboards – Are They Better Than A Grand Piano?

A digital keyboard definitely has a leg-up on an acoustic in some areas, beyond question:

Affordability - Most piano keyboards can be had for less than $1000. Acoustic grand pianos will put a dent in your bank account with their often $20,000 or more price tag.

Never goes out of tune - Being digital, a piano keyboard will always be in tune. Contrast that with an acoustic which will need to be tuned at least twice a year as temperatures change and the wood expands. This will cost you a couple hundred bucks.

Weight and size - Being lightweight and small in stature, especially when put up against a behemoth of a grand piano, a digital piano can be put anywhere and can go anywhere. Being 40 pounds or less on average, you can transport a digital piano to gigs or a friend’s house. On the flip side, a grand piano will weigh over 600 pounds in some cases and can’t be moved without professionals. Wherever you decide to put that acoustic, it’s staying where it is.

Here’s a video showing off a piano keyboard, the Yamaha CP33:

Don’t Lose the Weight

You’ll feel the heaviness of the keys if you ever play on an acoustic piano, and you’ll notice them being more heavy on the lower notes than on the high. This same ‘weighted’ key feel is apparent on most digital pianos, so you’ll learn to play like you’re on an acoustic, even though you’re not. This will pay off for you when you DO get that opportunity to play the real thing.

Another characteristic most digital pianos have is ‘touch sensitivity’. The sensitivity of the keys can be customized to give a lower or greater response depending on the velocity with which they are struck.

Have the Piano Teach You

A good keyboard will show you which keys to strike as you play. As the piano plays back a song, the piano will call your attention to the keys to press in conjunction with the notes being played.

The pace at which the song is played back can be sped up, slowed down, or even paused to make sure you’re following along ok. Over time, you’ll know which keys to strike before the piano even tells you.

Play A Collection of Instruments

Almost all keyboards will have what are referred to as ‘voices’, which are digital representations of other musical instruments. Feel like playing a saxophone? No problem. Trombone? Go for it. Push a button and you’ve got a different set of music at your fingertips.

Manipulate the Sound

As you go through my piano keyboard reviews, you’ll notice that some may offer varying degrees of reverberation and echo effects. This makes the piano sound like you’re playing in an opera house, auditorium, or concert hall for instance, even though you may only actually be playing in your apartment.

Record, Edit, and Share Your Music

One of the coolest things a keyboard can do is to capture and record your music. A digital keyboard can save the music either to internal memory or a memory card, or you can hook up your computer via either a USB or MIDI cable to the piano itself.

You can even layer other tracks of instruments alongside your piano piece. Once saved and put on your PC, you have the ability to edit and arrange the music precisely, after which you can post music for download or email it to your friends.

Headphone and Speaker Jacks

Make sure the piano has a jack for a set of headphones. Your friends and family who live in your home or apartment may not feel like hearing you play piano all the time. By utilizing a pair of headphones, you can appease the masses . Some piano players think the piano sounds better through a pair of headphones anyway, so it can be a win-win.

An auxiliary out jack can really come in handy also. If you’re taking your piano to clubs or weddings, for instance, to perform publicly, you’ll most likely need to boost the sound for the guests to get the full effect. A line-out socket will let you jack-in your amp or powered speakers in order to accomplish this.

What Are the Top Brands?

The big three when it comes to digital piano companies are Yamaha, Casio, and Korg. All three have models which will give you some of the features I’ve mentioned here as you search for the best digital piano for you.

Some Owner Opinions?

Here are some comments from owners of piano keyboards that I compiled while researching for the reviews on this site:

“…I really like this keyboard for practicing quietly at night and for connecting to a computer.”

“We bought this keyboard for our 5-year old son just starting piano lessons. So far we’ve been very pleased with it.”

“…with the added bonuses of being digital, a midi controller, with all of the bells and whistles, authentic sounds and features, it’s still better than any piano that I could afford…”

“This piano is perfect for my needs. Its programming is easy to learn, and it sounds just lovely. It’s an excellent value for the money.”

The Bottom Line

Just remember, that when all’s said and done, you’re never going to be able to completely match a grand piano’s touch and sound with a keyboard.

But they do come very close. It takes an astute ear to notice a difference, and they are perfect substitutes for most who can’t afford or have space for an acoustic. Piano keyboards have many advantages over acoustics, so the fact that they are almost the real thing, makes them the best choice for most.

Hopefully you now have a better idea of what to expect in a digital keyboard. Thanks for stopping by my piano keyboard reviews site.

Advantages of Digital Piano Brands Over An Acoustic

There are some major undeniable benefits that a digital keyboard will have over a grand piano:

An acoustic piano isn’t anywhere close to affordable for most people as they can cost many thousands of dollars. Compare that to the average digital keyboard, which will probably cost you under $1000, oftentimes well under that

You’ll have to tune a grand piano several times a year which will cost you a couple hundred dollars at least. There’s no such expense with a keyboard piano – no tuning needed!

Unless you have lots of room to spare, that acoustic piano will occupy a large area of your living quarters, and will be a permanent fixture. They weigh several hundred pounds at least and can only be moved with professional help. A keyboard is small by comparison, can be put anywhere or put away, and is very lightweight. It can be carried to places other than your home if you’d like to play or entertain elsewhere.

Here’s a short video that showcases a keyboard piano, the Yamaha NP30:

Weight For It

The keys on an acoustic piano have varying degrees of weight to them, depending on their location. Lower notes feel heavier to the touch, while high-end ones are on the lighter side. This same distribution is emulated on most digital pianos. Learning to play with the heavy and light keys will accustom you to the feel of a grand piano if you ever get to play one.

Another feature that can be had on some of the best piano systems is being able to set how much sound response you’ll get depending on how much you press the keys down. You can set them to either give a full response even if you only push the key partway down, or you set how much response you’ll get. Obviously on an acoustic there are varying degrees of sound depending on the strength of your press.

Learn to Play On Your Own

When you’re looking to buy piano keyboards, you may want to think about getting one that can actually teach you to play. These types of digital pianos do this by highlighting which keys to press while a song is being played for you. This shows you the notes you need to perform and gets you used to the song. Over time, you’ll get a feel for the keys before even being prompted. You’re able to adjust the tempo to match your stage of learning so you always feel comfortable. You’ll save a good chunk of change on piano school.

A Full-On Orchestra

Besides just using the digital piano to play the piano, all brands have models that let you play other musical instruments like a sax, guitar, or drums for example. You can play these in-tune with your piano to add aura and expression to your play.

Imagine Playing Anywhere

Even though you might only be playing in a small room, your piano doesn’t have to sound like it. If you’re looking to buy a piano keyboard, one thing to check is if the piano has some sort of sound treatment, such as echoing. This will cause the piano play to sound as if you’re performing in some other physical setting, such as a concert hall or opera house.

Arrange and Edit Your Own Music

Most pianos will allow you to record your performances and transfer them to a PC for later editing. You can even accompany your play with layering of other instruments to make it a full-tracked recording. Once you’re happy with the finished product, it’s all saved digitally and you can give it to whomever you like and show off your stuff.

A Tale of Two Jacks

Every keyboard is going to have a headphone jack, which will allow you to safely play at all hours of the night, while keeping other people’s ears free from harm It can be a major wrench in the works if you’re not able to practice whenever you want. Also, lots of piano players actually prefer the sound through the headphones as they feel more immersed in the music.

Another thing to keep in mind when you trying to decide is an external out socket. If you ever take your setup on the road and are playing in a large area, you’ll need to have one in order to ‘beef up’ the sound with an amplifier or powered speakers.

The Best Brands of Pianos

After doing my research for this website, I’ve found that the top piano brands are Yamaha, Casio, and Korg. They all make great models which will usually encompass most of the features I’ve told you about here.

Feedback?

Some comment cards I found from owners of these types of digital pianos while I was collecting research for putting together these digital piano reviews:

“If you are looking for a great digital keyboard, this is it.”

“The sound quality, especially for the price, is quite simply amazing…”

“It has the benefit of being relatively light and portable (especially by comparison to a real piano)…”

“Unless you’re Alfred Brendel, McCoy Tyner, or Stevie Wonder, this piano keyboard will be fine for all your piano playing.”

One Caveat

One thing to be aware of is that a piano keyboard, at the end of the day, is NOT a true grand piano and won’t ever be able to truly replicate the tone and touch.

On the other hand though, digital pianos ALMOST get there, and in most cases, are perfectly fine substitutes for most people, who couldn’t tell you which is which. As mentioned in the last comment above, only very accomplished musicians will have an ear to differentiate between the two. Electric pianos do their best piano impression, and they do it quite well. Add to that all the other benefits of a digital over a grand, and it wins hands down for almost everyone.

I hope you’re more clear on what you need to look for regarding the different piano brands. Thanks again for coming by my keyboard piano site.

I’ve done my homework on lots of digital pianos and you will find their reviews on the right side of this page. I’ve separated them into low-end, mid-tier, and high-end to make it easier to find what you need. After you’ve gone through them, you’ll have a better idea of just what kind of digital keyboard you should get.

There are many different types of electric pianos on the market now. This can make it difficult to come to a decision on one. To make it even more simpler, I’ve written about some features below that you might want to look for prior to making that final choice. I’m also presenting you with spec comparison charts, as well as different vendors you can purchase from and compare prices, so you can make sure you’re getting the best deal.

How Is a Digital Piano Better Than A Traditional Piano?

There are some chief ways in which a digital piano bests an acoustic, and there’s no denying these:

Be prepared to pay mucho dinero if you’re looking to get a grand piano – we’re talking $20,000 plus in some cases. Some of the best digital ones can be had for well under $1,000

Grand pianos require tuning a minimum of twice per year, meaning you’ll be shelling out a couple hundred bucks annually. A digital never needs to be tuned

An acoustic piano takes up large amount of space in a room, and once it’s there, it’s staying put. A keyboard can fit anywhere and be put away when finished playing

You’d never be able to move a grand piano anyway, as they can weigh up to 600 pounds or more. The average weight of a digital is under 40 pounds, meaning that you can take it and play it wherever

Here’s a short video that showcases a digital piano, the Casio PX-130:

How Do the Keys Feel?

Keys on a digital piano are usually weighted. This mimics the feel of an actual grand piano by making keys heavier on the low-end and less heavy as you move up the registers.

A good deal of digitals also have what they term “touch sensitivity”. Put simply, you can customize the amount of pressure you need to put on a key in order to get a response, and the amount of response.

Teach Yourself to Play

Some of the nicer electric pianos will be able to help you learn how to play piano. The piano can play back songs in its memory and, while doing so, show you which keys to press as the song is played out. You can set your own tempo and go as fast or slow as you wish. You’ll come to recognize the different key signatures as you play more often. More money saved by not signing up for piano lessons.

Join Together With the Band

You’ll be able to play other instruments or ‘voices’ on most digital pianos. Just push a button and you can be playing as a trumpet, saxophone, or flute for example. You can then layer these other instruments together while playing the piano to give you a backdrop for your performance.

Where Do You Want to Play Today?

Even if you live in a one-bedroom apartment, you can simulate playing in a music hall or arena for instance. This is accomplished via sound effects such as echo and reverb. Most pianos offer some form of this. You can even brighten or soften the tone of the piano itself to match your mood.

Your Very Own Recording Studio At Your Fingertips

Some of the better digital systems out there will let you record your own music. Not only record, but add layers and arrangements to as well. This is where the ‘voices’ talked about earlier really come into their own as you can use them to add multiple tracks of other instruments to your piano session. How professional does that sound? And not only that – once you’ve got it the way you want it, you’re able to save what you’ve composed to your PC, where you can further edit it and then share it with your friends.

Anything Else It Should Have?

One thing you’ll want to make sure of is that there is a headphone jack, though I haven’t come across one yet that didn’t have one. You’d be surprised how handy this can be late at night, for instance, when you’re wide awake and wanting to play but don’t want to disturb others in your household.

Another nice thing to have is a line-out jack. This will let you hook up external speakers or an amplifier to the piano so that everyone can hear your music if you’re playing in a large hall for real, and not just simulating it

What Brands Are Best?

The big three in the industry are Yamaha, Casio, and Korg. You’ll find most of the features I’ve talked about in many of their models. Not all pianos will possess every feature, which is why you should take your time to determine which keyboard best accommodates your needs.

What Do the Owners Say?

Here are some comment highlights from owners of digital pianos that I’ve come across in my review writing:

“I was truly surprised by the touch and the sound. It is great overall.”

“When I play, I feel like I am sitting at a grand.”

“You won’t get a better deal for the money.”

“…I can’t tell the difference between this and a real piano.”

Where Does It Fall Short?

The obvious place – it isn’t a REAL piano. A digital piano will never be able to completely sound and feel like a grand piano.

But that doesn’t mean that they don’t come exceptionally close. The large majority of people won’t notice a difference in either sound or feel. It takes a very experienced ear to pick up on the slight nuances between the two. Considering the benefits overall of an electric piano versus a grand, and just how near the digital comes to the real deal, most people find it more than an acceptable alternative.

I hope you now feel more informed regarding what digital pianos offer and how you can get the most out of them. Thanks again for visiting!

(some links here are sponsored affiliate links.
To also aid you, please check out the feature comparison chart below, which will allow you to see how they stack up against one another. If you come to a decision, I’ve helped make sure you can get the best deal possible on a Yamaha keyboard by putting together price comparisons from top internet vendors on each review page.

What Makes a Yamaha Keyboard Better Than An Acoustic?

There are some major benefits that a Yamaha electric piano has over its acoustic counterpart:

The main thing is COST – grand pianos can easily be tens of thousands of dollars, which effectively prices them out of most people’s range. A very good Yamaha keyboard on the other hand, will cost you less than a grand (yes, pun intended )

Don’t worry about tuning Yamaha keyboards – they don’t need it. Try telling that to an acoustic

Put your digital piano anywhere – it’s small enough to even be put away when no one’s using it. With a grand piano, sometimes it can feel like you need an aircraft hangar to accommodate it

Most Yamahas are lightweight and can be taken to clubs or gigs. A traditional piano though can weigh over 500 pounds – that puppy ain’t going anywhere anytime soon, plus you need to hire professionals to move it

Here’s a video of a Yamaha keyboard, the CP33, being shown off:

Put Some Weight Into It…

It’s uncommon for electric pianos these days to not have keys that are lighter on higher-end notes and heavier on the lower-end. These are referred to as ’weighted’ keys. They represent how a true acoustic piano’s keys would feel so that you get the same experience. You won’t feel like a novice if you ever get to perform on a traditional instrument.

Another nice feature that some of the keyboards can have is being able to set the amount of volume response you’ll get from keys depending on how much strength you use to press them. This also emulates a traditional piano.

Let the Piano Teach YOU to Play

A really good Yamaha piano will take you by the hand (well not literally) and guide you through learning to play songs. These types of pianos have songs built into them, along with lights above all the keys. As you have the piano play a song, the key lights will illuminate, showing you which key needs to be pressed in order to match what’s being played. You can play along to the song as slow or as fast as you want. You’ll eventually get a feel for the compositions as you learn to play.

Add In Some Other Instruments

Most Yamaha keyboards have the ability to emulate other musical instruments, such as drums, a trombone, or a flute for instance. You don’t have to be relegated to just playing the piano. Play whatever you feel like to match your mood. It’s even possible to play more than one instrument at once or use them for backing while you are performing.

Play As If You Were On a Grand Stage

You’re able to enhance the sound of the piano itself and other instruments on almost any Yamaha keyboard. The piano will add echo, depth, and reverb sound effects to make it sound as if you’re playing in a large auditorium if you like or a small room, no matter where your ‘physical’ location actually is. You can even vary the ‘brilliance’ of the piano sound itself from either Brilliant to a more subtle Soft.

Arrange and Record Your Own Music

An awesome feature that almost any Yamaha electric piano is going to have is being able to record as you play. Most pianos have their own internal memory for this purpose, and will even let you record and layer multiple tracks together – this is where the other instruments come in handy. You can add so much depth and sophistication to your music in this way.

Better yet, when you’ve gotten everything the way you want it, you can then transfer the completed work to your computer via a MIDI or USB interface. From there you can edit it further, add in other effects, and perfect it so that you can share it with the world.

Make Sure There Are ’Jacks’ In-The-Box

I don’t think that you can even find a digital piano these days that won’t have at least one headphone jack. It may not seem like it, but lots of people use a headset while they play, a major reason being so that they don’t disturb anyone. Ever try playing at 3am while others are trying to sleep? Probably not gonna fly.

Most of the keyboards will also have some sort of Out jack so that you can run an amplifier to the piano or use external speakers. If you’re playing for a large audience, an amp will be necessary to make sure your music is heard by all.

Owner Quotes

While putting together all of the digital piano reviews on this site, I was constantly reading feedback from owners of these types of keyboards:

“It sounds exactly like an acoustic piano.”

“It’s very light and easily portable…”

“Overall, this thing is a steal.”

“I have not seen anything on the market that comes close to the sound quality and piano feel…”

What Am I Missing?

Well, as in life, nothing is perfect. If you’re a true piano aficionado and music student, you are probably above a digital piano, which can never TRULY be on par with the sound and feel of an acoustic.

But Yamaha keyboards come EXTREMELY close to fulfilling that promise. If someone covered your eyes and forced you to choose which sound was an acoustic and which was a Yamaha keyboard, most would not be able to tell – yes, it’s that realistic. And when you factor in all the advantages of recording, other instruments, cost, size, and so on that you get with an electric piano, there really is no comparison overall.

Obviously if you have the means, you’ll get the grand piano, but for the vast majority, a digital piano is neck and neck with it. I’d like to thank you again for dropping by and reading the Yamaha electric piano reviews I’ve put together. I trust you found them helpful and have come away more informed. Please check back often as I’m constantly adding new information to the site.

How Are Yamaha Pianos Better Than a Grand Piano?

Probably apparent already, here are the main benefits that a Yamaha digital piano has over an acoustic:

You’ll save a TON of money. If you go the acoustic route, be prepared to pay upwards of $20,000 in some cases. The average digital piano will run you less than $1000

A digital piano never needs constant tuning since it’s, well, digital, and has no strings. More money in your pocket.

No need to worry about where to put your Yamaha piano. You pretty much can put it anywhere, and then store it away when not in use. I don’t think your huge grand piano is going to fit in the closet

And in terms of moving a grand piano, good luck as they can weigh hundreds of pounds. Your average digital piano will weigh less than 40, so you can take it and play it wherever you like

Here’s a video of a Yamaha piano, the Yamaha P95, in action:

Feels Like the Real Thing

The majority of Yamaha digital pianos will have weighted keys. The keys of the lower registers will feel heavier, while the higher ones will be lighter, just like an acoustic grand. It’s a good feature to have, considering that your fingers will be able to handle an actual grand if you ever play one.

Being able to adjust the sensitivity of the key presses in relation to the sound is another feature to look at. You’re able to customize how much tone volume you’ll get depending on how much you press the keys.

Learn the Piano On Your Own

You can actually learn to play piano from some of the higher end digital pianos. The piano will actually play one of its built-in songs and will instruct you via LED lights as to which keys to press in tune with the song. You’re able to go as slow or as fast as you want – you set the pace. You’ll begin to get a feel for the piano as you practice more and more.

Queue Up the Orchestra…

Almost all Yamaha pianos will let you play the keyboard as some instrument other than a piano. For instance, just by pushing a button, you can switch the piano to sound instead like a flute, or a drum set. You can even play multiple instruments at once to accompany you while playing the piano.

Sound Enhancement Anyone?

Likewise, a good piano will also give you echo and reverb sound effects. Using these, even while playing in your home, you can manipulate the sound to appear as if you’re playing in a concert hall or various other venues. Other sound variations can include differing versions of the piano sound itself, from bright to soft.

Record It For Posterity

One of the best and coolest features that a digital piano can have is being able to record your own songs. You can record just the piano itself, or you can layer one or more of the other instruments the piano offers into your song. You can then transfer the song to your computer to further arrange and edit. The finished composition is now digitally saved and available to share with your friends.

Be Sure to Plug In…

Every Yamaha digital piano is going to have a headphone jack. You may not think that’s important, but wait till you want to play or practice with others in the house. They may not share your enthusiasm for the piano. Save face with a pair of headphones and practice any time of day or night!

Most Yamaha pianos likewise will also have a line-out plug so that you can connect a set of amplified speakers or an amp itself straight to the keyboard. This will also be a godsend if you’re ever performing in a large hall for instance, and the built-in speakers of the piano just won’t carry for the venue.

Customer Feedback

I collected lots of info while writing reviews for these Yamaha digital pianos, including owner quotes – here are some of the highlights I came across:

“It sounds and feels great for a digital piano.”

“This keyboard has excellent and realistic keyboard action.”

“The Value is amazing.”

“Overall its an awesome investment and a great instrument for beginners.”

Ok, What’s the Catch?

Well, you guessed it – there is one thing that keeps a Yamaha piano, or any digital piano for that matter, from being perfect. This, of course, is that it ISN’T a real, true, genuine acoustic piano, and it never will be able to fully replicate the sound and feel that you can only get from the real thing.

That being said though, Yamaha digital pianos come as close as you’re likely ever to get to one without all the aforementioned challenges of a grand piano, and they do a great job of it. Most people will not notice a difference in the sound or quality, and for those that do, most of them will gladly accept it as a slight compromise since they can’t possess a grand on their own, plus you get all of the extra bells and whistles that go along with a digital piano. In terms of price alone, there really is no contest between Yamaha pianos and an acoustic.

(some links here are sponsored affiliate links.
